കടത്തനാടിന്റെ ചരിത്രമുറങ്ങുന്ന നാദാപുരത്തിന്‍റെ മണ്ണിലെ തൂണേരി എന്ന കൊച്ചു ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് എന്‍റെ വാസം. അവിടെ മഹത്തായ പാരമ്പര്യമുള്ള പുതുക്കുടി തറവാട്ടിലാണ് എന്‍റെ ജനനം.അര നൂറ്റാണ്ട് മുന്‍പ് തൂണേരി എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിന്‍റെ കാണപ്പെട്ട ദൈവമാണ് മൊയ്തു ഹാജി എന്ന എന്‍റെ ഉപ്പാപ്പ. ജന്മിത്ത സമ്പ്രദായം നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന കാലമായതിന്നാല്‍ അന്നത്തെ തൂണേരിയുടെ മൂന്നില്‍ രണ്ട് ഭാഗവും മൊയ്തു ഹാജിയുടെ കൈവശമായിരുന്നു. നാട്ടിലും വിദേശത്തും തൊട്ടതെല്ലാം പൊന്നാക്കി മാറ്റിയിരുന്നു ഇദ്ദേഹം.സിംഗപൂരിലായിരുന്നു വിദേശ വാസം.ധാരാളം സ്വത്ത് സമ്പാദ്യം ഉണ്ട്.അദ്ദേഹം ദാനശീലന്‍ ആയിരുന്നു .പാവങ്ങളെ സഹായിക്കലാണ് പതിവ്.ജാതി മത വ്യതാസമില്ലാതെ വാരിക്കോരി കൊടുക്കും.ഇത്രയൊക്കെ ആണെങ്കിലും 49 ആം വയസ്സില്‍ മൊയ്തു ഹാജി വിടപറഞ്ഞു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും ഇളയ മകനായ അധ്യാപകനായിരുന്ന ഇസ്മായിലിന്റെ മകളാണ് ഞാന്‍.മൊയ്തു ഹാജിയെപ്പോലെതന്നെ 49 ആം വയസ്സിലാണ് എന്‍റെ ഉപ്പ വിട പറഞ്ഞത്.

കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയിലെ വടകര താലൂക്കില്‍ തൂണേരി ബ്ലോക്ക്‌ പരിധിയില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഗ്രാമമാണ്‌ തൂണേരി. ഗ്രാമമായതിനാല്‍ തന്നെ ഗ്രാമ പഞ്ചായത്ത്‌ ഭരണം നടത്തുന്നതാണ്.തൂനീരിയുടെ മൊത്തം വിസ്തൃതി 15.45 ച.കി.മി. ആണ്.തൂണേരിയുടെ വടക്ക് ചെക്കെട്ട് കിഴക്ക് നാദാപുരം കിഴക്ക് പുറമേരി.പടിഞ്ഞാറു കച്ചേരി പഞ്ചായത്തുകളാണ്.പഴയ  മലബാര്‍ ജില്ലയില്‍ ആദ്യമായി രൂപീകരിച്ച പഞ്ചായത്തുകളില്‍ ഒന്നാണ് തൂണേരി പഞ്ചായത്ത്. നിലവില്‍ ഇവിടുത്തെ ജനസംഖ്യ 20208 ആണ്. ഇതില്‍ സാക്ഷരതര്‍ 85 % ആണ്. വിദ്യാസംമ്പന്നമായ ഗ്രാമമാണ് ഇത്.തൂണേരി ഒരു ചെറു പട്ടണമാണ്. ഈ ഗ്രാമത്തില്‍ എല്‍.പി.,യു.പി സ്കൂളുകള്‍ ,നഴ്സറി, എന്നിവ ഉണ്ട്.ഇവിടെ നിരവധി ഗവ: സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുണ്ട്.ഇവിടെ പ്രധാനമായും ഉത്സവങ്ങല്‍ക്കാന് പ്രാധാന്യമാണ്.മത സൗഹാര്‍ദം നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്ന നാടാണിത്.ജാതി മത വ്യത്യാസമില്ലാതെ നിരവധി സൗജന്യ ക്യാമ്പുകള്‍ ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ട്.

ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്ക് ഒരു തിരിഞ്ഞു നോട്ടം.

ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്‍റെ ആരംഭത്തില്‍ കര്‍ഷക ഗ്രാമമാണ്‌ ഇത്.ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രധാന തൊഴില്‍ കാര്‍ഷിക മേഖലയാണ്.നെല്‍കൃഷി ആണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രാധാന്യം. മറ്റു വിളകള്‍ ധാരാളം കൃഷി ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.ഇവിടെ ജാതി വ്യവസ്ഥ നിലനിന്നിരുന്നു.വയല്‍ പ്രദേശത്ത് നെല്‍കൃഷി ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. കൃഷിയുടെ മുഖ്യ സ്രോതസ്സാണ് കന്നുകാലികള്‍.

വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ചരിത്രം.

തൂണേരിയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ സ്കൂള്‍ നിലവില്‍ വന്നത് 1881ലാണ്.ആദ്യം ഇവിടെ പ്രൈമറി സ്കൂളുകള്‍ ഉണ്ടായത്. പിന്നീട് അത് എല്‍.പി.യു.പി. സ്കൂളുകളായി മാറിയത്.മിക്ക കുട്ടികളും ഇവിടെയാണ് പഠിച്ചത്.

വ്യാവസായിക ചരിത്രം

ഒട്ടേറെ കുടില്‍ വ്യാവസായങ്ങള്‍ മുന്‍കാലത്ത് ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.ഉദാ: പപ്പട നിര്‍മ്മാണം,അവില്‍ നിര്‍മ്മാണം.പരമ്പരാഗതമായി കൈത്തറി വ്യവസായങ്ങള്‍ ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ട്.ഇവിടെ കളിമണ്‍ വ്യവസായ സഹകരണസംഖം ഉണ്ട്.

സാംസ്കാരിക ചരിത്രം

തൂനെരിക്കും ഉണ്ട് ഒരു മഹത്തായ ഒരു സംസാരിക പാരമ്പര്യം.കഥകളിയും അര്‍ബനമുട്ടും ഒപ്പനയും ഈ പരംപര്യതിനെ ഭാഗമാണ്. ഇസ്ലാം മതക്കാരുടെ പഴയ ആരാധനാലയങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ട്.പരദേവത ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും ഉണ്ട്.മത ആചാരങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പ്രാധാന്യവും പ്രോല്‍സാഹനങ്ങളും നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു എല്ലാവരും.ഇന്നും ഈ ആചാരങ്ങളും അനുഷ്ടാനങ്ങളും നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. തൂനെരിയിലെ ജനങ്ങള്‍ മറ്റുള്ളവരില്‍ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തരാണ്.

I am living in a village called Puthoor which is situated in 20 km far from Thalassery in kannur district . My village is blessed with natural beauty .My home situated in the middle of 2 rivers ,a school and a pond .

I would like to share you about my place’s marriage ceremony .Society permits for marriage with  some formalities ,functions ,practices .And these were different in various societies .When a proposal is taken place then seek for information secretly about the person whose marriage proposal is came and about his family .After that the important relatives of the girl will went to the boys home and seek for clarification.

The ceremony of first site of a girl  happends with much humour that is when a boy decided to see a girl to marry he should go at first with his friend .The boy and his friend will go at first if the boy like the girl he will inform his parents after that his parents inform the girl’s parents .It is usual in many places but the different is ,when this ceremony is taken place in girl’s home may have a lot of relatieves and the boy will be welcomed with a lot of food means a various type of food  namely unnkai,irachipathil,kaipola  etc .It is important thing that if the boy is not welcomed with these when he returns his home the all will be asked him about the food if the food is not well then they estimate about the family ,their economy etc .this estimate will happen only in “women’s ” mind.

Engagement  - By calculating a day for engagement girls father  or guardian and chief person in that locality are goes to boys home and the chief of that area were also at there and all  will declare the date which is convenient to all that will return after having food .

Practice in marriage - in this gaenaration the concept of marriage werefully different and changed alot the marriage turned to a luxurious practices  . The marriage function on house is changed as a gand festival in these day more foods are decrated in tables like a rain of foods  there is fashion in making foods at night and tha day of marriage different are served in different days .

A trend in marriage is taken place in these days  ASAR KALYANAM  in my opinion it is better than the the rest because it reduce the cost of marriage it is done by many of my areas .The night before the day marriage is known as MEHANDI NIGHT(MILANAHI)at that time more peoples were invited like marriage days most of people used video cameras to shoot the mehandi night  also wedding day , its a trend  in many houses  to conduct stage programmes including song party but i didn’t see in my area .

Nikah- the married lifebeginning from nikah  it is very importent in islamic view first and most importent thing in marriage . Some times it happends in bride groom’s home or may be in mosque .The guardian of bride and two witness and whom is chief kadi were the main person engaged in nikah .The main activity related to nikah is a pledge between the bride groom and the bride’s guardian after that the main activity of marriage is done .In my area the nikah taken place in yesterday.There is a chance to decide a marriage and the nikkah may be after one or two years and also a chance to do a nikkah and to decide marriage function after one or two years.

In wedding day both of the houses makes food of different types. Now it is common to provide special foods and some sort of  juices, ice creams etc...... The persons who came from bride groom’s home have food in brides home.After the ceremony of nikkah bride groom and his friends and relatives will visit bride’s home.At this time there is a practice which humorous to all that is the bride’s mother will appear with a glass of milk this milk will be drinkbride and bride groom.And a ring will be changed each other.After they return the women relatives of bride groom will visit the home. They wiil be warmly welcomed and food were provided to them like tea or coffee or ice cream etc. They make up bridly the girl with new dress . After that they return to bride groom’s home with the bride . After their return the relatives of bride will follow them  without mother and father .To finish this it will take more time . They will travel in bus and they sing loudly in the bus like

             “Madhuvarna poovalle  narunila poomolalle

          “Madhura pathinezhil lanki mariyunnole”

Vili - The next practice after marriage is vili there is 3 types of vili . First vili this be celebrated grantly after 3 days  of marriage .The couples will go to the bride’s home .before that some one will came to the bride groom’s home for inviting them to their house  . When they visit the home they will be take some dress with them for bride’s family .In that time bride’s home will be  arranged  with different types of foods . Like that there may 2 vilis.

Thakkaram - In first reception  the relatives of bride ‘s  will visit bride groom‘s home at there so many foods are arranged.  Another day bride groom’s family visit bride ‘s house . This will be celebrated grantly . On that day’s night both of them stay at there. In my area usually a married girl will stay in husband’s home .They will visit her home  and stay only one or three days.

കതിരൂരിന്‍റെ ചരിത്രം

എന്‍റെ നാട് കതിരൂരാണ്.ഞാന്‍ എന്‍റെ ഗ്രാമത്തെ വളരെയധികം ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നു.പച്ചവിരിച്ച പാടങ്ങളും കുലച്ചുനില്‍ക്കുന്ന തെങ്ങിന്‍തോപ്പുകളും പഴുത്തുനില്‍ക്കുന്ന പഴങ്ങളും നിറഞ്ഞ പടതിനിടയിലൂടെ നടക്കുമ്പോള്‍ സ്വര്‍ഗത്തിലേക്ക് പോകുന്നത് പോലെ തോന്നും.അത്രയും മനോഹരമാണ് എന്‍റെ ഗ്രാമം .

          കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷത്തെ ശുചിത്വ പഞ്ചായതിനുള്ള അവാര്‍ഡും കൂടാതെ പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക്‌ വിമുക്ത പഞ്ചായതിനുള്ള അവാര്‍ഡും നമുക്കാണ് ലഭിച്ചത്. അതില്‍ ഞാന്‍ വളരെയധികം അഭിമാനം കൊളളുന്നു.സൂര്യന്‍റെ മറ്റൊരു നാമമാണ് കതിരൂര്‍ എന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. പ്രശസ്തമായ സൂര്യനാരായണ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത് കതിരൂരിന്ടെ ഹൃദയഭാഗതതാണ്. അത്കൊണ്ടാണ് കതിരൂര് എന്ന പേര് ലഭിച്ചത് എന്ന് പഴമക്കാര്‍ പറയുന്നതായി കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.ഇതൊക്കെ തന്നെയാണ് എന്‍റെ നാടിന്‍റെ രഹസ്യം.

    പ്രകൃതിയുടെ ഇദാപെടലുകള്‍ കാരണമാവാം ഇവിടെയുള്ള മനുഷ്യരുടെ ഹൃദയം ലോലമാണ് .എങ്കില്‍ പോലും വികസനത്തിന്‍റെ കാര്യത്തില്‍ ഒട്ടും പിറകിലല്ല എന്‍റെ ജന്മസ്ഥലമായ കതിരൂര്.വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങള്‍,ആശുപത്രി,മാര്‍ക്കറ്റുകള്‍,എന്നീ എല്ലാ ആധുനിക സൗകര്യങ്ങളും ലഭ്യമാണ്.വിദ്യഭ്യാസ കാര്യത്തില്‍ ഏറെ മുന്നിട്ട് നില്കുന്നതാണ് എന്‍റെ നാട്ടിലെ സ്കൂളുകള്‍.അതില്‍ എടുത്തു പറയേണ്ട ഒരു വിദ്യാലയമാണ് കതിരൂര് ഗവ.ഹയര്‍സെക്കന്‍ഡറി സ്കൂള്‍.

കതിരൂര്‍ ഹൈസ്കൂള്‍

       കടിരൂരിന്റെ സാംസ്കാരിക പുരോഗതിയില്‍ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങള്‍ വഹിച്ച പങ്ക് നിസ്സീമമാണ്. ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രമുഖ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സ്ഥാപനമാണ്‌ കതിരൂര്‍ ഗവ. ഹൈസ്കൂള്‍.കതിരൂരിന്റെ ബംഗ്ലാവ് പറമ്പില്‍ സ്ഥാപിച്ച എഴുത്ത് പള്ളിയില്‍ നിന്നും കതിരൂരിന്റെ കഥ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു. മലബാര്‍ ഡിസ്ട്രിക്റ്റ് ബോര്‍ഡ് ഈ സ്ഥാപനം ഏറ്റെടുത്തു. തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ ഈ വിദ്യാലയം ഒരു മിട്ല്‍ സ്കൂളായി ഉയര്‍ത്താന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് മിഡ്ല്‍ സ്കൂള്‍ ഹൈസ്കൂളായി ഉയര്‍ത്താനുള്ള നീക്കങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായി. അപ്പോള്‍ ഇവിടെ ഹൈസ്കൂള്‍ അനുവടിക്കരുതെന്ന്‍ അതിവിചിത്രമായ ആവശ്യം ഉന്നയിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ഏതാനും പൌരമുഖയന്മാര്‍ ഡിസ്ട്രിക്റ്റ് ബോര്‍ഡ് പ്രസിടെണ്ടിന്‍ ഒരു നിവേദനം നല്‍കി. അങ്ങനെ ഹൈസ്കൂള്‍ കതിരൂരില്‍ നിലവില്‍ വന്നു.

      കൂത്തുപറമ്പ്,മട്ടന്നൂര്‍,ഇരിട്ടി,പേരാവൂര്‍,മാനന്തവാടി,പാനൂര്‍ എന്നീ വിദൂരസ്ഥലങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നെല്ലാം ഹൈസ്കൂള്‍ വിദ്യഭ്യസതിനെതിയത് കതിരുരിലാണ്.വയനടിലും കിഴക്കന്‍ മലയോരങ്ങളിലും ഉള്ള വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ കതിരൂരിലെ കടകളുടെ മുകല്തട്ടുകള്‍ വടകയ്ക്കെടുതാണ് പഠിച്ചത്.പഴയ കോട്ടയം താലൂക്കില്‍ ക്വിറ്റ് ഇന്ത്യ സമരം നടത്തിയത് കതിരൂര്‍ ഹൈസ്കൂള്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളാണ് എന്ന് ഇന്നത്തെ മുതിര്‍ന്ന തലമുറയില്‍ പെട്ടവര്‍ പറയുന്നു.

കായികരംഗം

   കായിക രംഗങ്ങളുടെ പരിശീലനക്കലരിയയിരുന്നു കതിരൂര്‍ ഹൈസ്കൂള്‍ ഗ്രൗണ്ട്.അവിടെ കളിച്ചു വളര്‍ന്ന സ്പോര്‍ട്സ് താരങ്ങളുടെ കഥ രോമാഞ്ചതോട് കൂടി മാത്രമേ നമുക്കൊര്‍ക്കാനാവൂ. 1948 ല്‍ മലബാര്‍ ഡിസ്ട്രിക്റ്റ് ബാട്മിന്ടന്‍ ടൂര്‍ണമെന്റില്‍ ചാമ്പ്യന്ശിപ് നേടിയത് കതിരൂര്‍ ഹൈ സ്കൂള്‍ ടീമായിരുന്നു. കളി നിയന്ത്രിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ദീര്‍ഘകാലം കതിരൂരിലെ കയികരന്ഗത്ത്‌ നിറഞ്ഞുനിന്നിരുന്നു.

സര്‍ക്കസും കതിരൂരും

    തലശേരിയില്‍ ജന്മം കൊണ്ട ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ ത്രീ റിങ്ങ് സര്‍ക്കസ് കമ്പനി ആയിരുന്നു കമലാ സര്‍ക്കസ്. ദാമോദരന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ആയിരുന്നു ഇതിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥന്‍.കതിരൂര്‍ സ്വദേശിയാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം.സര്‍ക്കസ് കലയെ പരമോന്നതയില്‍ എത്തിച്ചതിന്റെ ബഹുമതിക്ക് അര്‍ഹനായി കതിരൂരിലെ സര്‍ക്കസ് കലാകാരന്മാരില്‍ അഗ്രഗണ്യനായിരുന്ന കക്കാടന്‍ ഗോപി സ്വന്തമായി നിര്‍മല സര്‍ക്കസിന് രൂപം നല്‍കി.അക്കാലത്ത് അഞ്ജാം മൈല്‍ വയലില്‍ ഈ സര്‍ക്കസ് പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കാരുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. സര്‍ക്കസുമായുള്ള ഈ നിരന്തര ബന്ധം കതിരൂരില്‍ ഒട്ടേറെ സര്‍ക്കസ് കലാകാരന്മാര്‍ക്ക് ജന്മം നല്‍കി.  

    കതിരൂരില്‍ ഇന്ന്‍ സ്ഥിരതാമസക്കാരനായ ഒരു മൃഗ പരിശീലകനാണ് വിജയന്‍.45 വര്‍ഷം റിംഗ് മാസ്റ്റര്‍ അയി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു.അദ്ദേഹം ചിമ്പാന്‍സി,ഗറില്ല,എന്നീ മൃഗങ്ങളെ ഇണക്കുന്നതില്‍ പ്രത്യേക പരിജ്ഞാനം ഉള്ള ആളാണ്.          

കളരി

   കേരളത്തനിമ നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഒരായോധന കലയാണ്‌ കളരിപ്പയറ്റ. കളരിയുടെ ഈറ്റില്ലമായിരുന്നു കതിരൂര്‍ ഗുരുക്കള്‍. കിഴക്കേ കതിരൂരിലെ നാലു പുരയിടങ്ങള്‍ കോട്ടയം തമ്പുരാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സ്വന്തമായി ചാര്തിക്കൊടുത്തു. കോട്ടയത്തിന്‍റെ വിവിധ പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ കളരികള്‍ കെട്ടി കതിരൂര്‍ ഗുരുക്കള്‍ ആയോധന വിദ്യയില്‍ പരിശീലനം നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു. കളരിയുടെ സമീപത്തായി ചെമ്പക മരവും മാലോര്‍ ദൈവത്തിന്‍റെ സങ്കല്പികമായ കല്ത്തറയും ഇന്നും അവിടെ കാണാം.കതിരൂര്‍ ഗുരുക്കളുടെ വംശ പരമ്പരയില്‍പ്പെട്ട ചുണ്ടാങ്ങാപൊയിലില്‍ ഗുരുക്കള്‍ വീട്ടില്‍ കുഞ്ഞിരാമന്‍ മാസ്റ്ററുടെ പൂജാമുറിയില്‍ കതിരൂര്‍ ഗുരുക്കള്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന വാള്‍ ഇന്നും കാണാം.

   ഇത്രയും ചരിത്ര പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളതാണ് എന്‍റെ നാട്.കൂടാതെ നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലുള്ള ആളുകള്‍ തരിശുഭൂമികള്‍ വാഴത്തോട്ടങ്ങളാക്കിയും പച്ചയായ ഭൂമിയാക്കിയും മാറ്റി അതില്‍ ജൈവവളം മാത്രം ഉപയോഗിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.ഇന്നത്തെ തലമുറക്ക് ഇതൊരു മാതൃകയാവട്ടെ.

Marriage ceremony of thalassery muslims deals with many function and occassions. Here, we are going to discuss about a girl side marriage.

It starts with the enquiry of the brides family about the grooms family background. If they like it they will proceed it by the first step

PENKETTU

This is the first occassion of the ceremony. In this only male members are participated. This will be held in grooms house. Father and uncle of the bride will go to grooms house and they will have the talk of both bride and groom.  The photo of the bride will be given to groom. With this the function ends.

PENNKANAL

This is the second occassion of the ceremony. This will be solemnized only when the boy comes to the brides house with his friends .This is a function held in brides house. This is a function held in brides house.The girl will be dressed upwell and shown to the boy. Both bride and groom will be permitted to talk together. The groom and his friends will be provided with juices. If the groom likes the girl the grooms mother and sister will come to seeher another day.

ENGAGEMENT [VALAYIDAL]

This is the third function of the ceremony which occurs in brides house .The girl will be dressed like a mini bride. All the members of the groom will come to the function. Many types of food will be provided to them. The groom’s family will give some dressess,ornaments and chocolates and phone to the girl. With this the function ends.

NISHCHAYAM [DATE FIXING]

This is the fourth occassion of the ceremony. This will be held in grooms house. Girl father and other important men of both bride and groom family will attend the eve. The main thing is that they will fix the date of the merriage. They will provided food.

ARIKUTHICHERAL

This is the fifth main function of the ceremony. This is normally held in Friday. This function has an importantce thatthis will be seen only in thalassery. Also this is the functon were only female members are participated. This function starts with the noon meal. The girl will be dressed up like an old muslim lady. The dress is called as kachi and mundu. The custom is there will be an olakkaand uralto beat rice. The bride will take olakka and hit on ural. There will be mini party for relatives in the afternoon. Tonight the girl will put mehandi her hands and legs. With this the day is ends.

MYLANCHI [MEHANDI]

The occassion will be held on Saturday night. Relative will come in the afternoon itself. But the programm is on night. Rice,sugar, ghee and onion will be given from fathers house armty’s house. Fathers family will dress the bride. The custom is that in both of the brides hand leaf will be kept and all will put mehandis in the leaf and photos will be taken. Besides that all girls will sing the songs. By this night the bedroom of the bride should be ready. Late night of this day some people from groom house comes and took the ornaments,bedroom and dresssof the bride. After tea and snacks they will go back. With this the day ends.

MARRIAGE[NIKAH]

This is the main day of the ceremony. The girl will be dressed up by sister’s husband family. Photo will be taken. All will be given food. All the male members of bride faily will go to the masjid and the nikkah will be solemnized. Mulaqat session will be there. Some people of bride family will go to groom house to pick the the groom. Groom will be welcomed like a prince in bride house. Groom will be worned a maala and given a boquette. The groom will be directed to the bedroom and photos will be taken with friends. The bride will be coming from another room to the bed room with girls around singing song

“Sabhayellam Anuvadham

Thara venam namukkippol

Chamayicha puthunari itha pokunne....”

Brides uppuma or karnavar will guide the bride to enter the bedroom. The bride groom will put inside the room above 5 minutes. The groom will give money to the bride. The door will be locked. After 5 minutes the door will be unlocked and one of the uppitha of the bride will come and put the mahar. The mother of the bride come with milk and will give to groom and bride. Photos will be taken. Groom will go back home with two children from bride house. Some female members of the groom family will come with these children to bride house and they will dress up the bride. They will be provided tea and snacks. They will take the bride with them to grooms house also bride family. They will be given tea and snacks. Photo session will be there. Two children will stay with the bride in grooms house and the rest will come back. Some male members from bride family will go to the grooms house tonight and they will pick up the bride groom from there. The box given from groom house will be put in the dicki of the car. They will go to brides house.The groom will be provided food. The girl will be again dressed and the bride groom will be put into the bedroom . The dayend with this. The boy will give a ring to the bride inside bedroom. It is called “Thottamodiram”

AFTER MARRIAGE

Here comes the flow of functions.From the first day itself after marriage function will be organized.

ALIYANKANJI

The brides brother and male faculties will have a party in groom house. Many types of food will be there. The brother will be given“kanji”in a bowl.This is why this custom named. 

KOOTI KONDAKKAL

This is a function held in grooms house. This will be for the first time the girls mother visiting the pyappala home. Many female members also will participate in the program. Many food will be there. The girl will stay in grooms house. With this the program ends. The program named because the girl was sent to pyapala house.

KOOTTIKONDERAL

The bride will be brought back to her house by groom family. They will have food there. The grooms mother comes to brides house and he will be given sadhya. With this the program ends.

11th DAY

The pyapala will give money to buy fish. This is called “Meen paisa”. This is for the first time pyapala will be provided with fish. Many other food will be there.

40^th DAY

This day 40 types of ‘Ada’ will be present. Children from grooms house will come and many food will be there. The pyapala will give money to bride. It is called “chelavu paisa”. One boy will be dressed up like a girl and send infront of pyapala. And there begins the tradition. This boy will say

“ Pyapale............

Illayum thinnu, Idtham poyachu,

Adayum thinnu, Adangikko pyapale.....”

Besides this there will be parties for friends of the pyapala.

Thakkaram from every family members etc.....

Besides mahar the girl will get ornaments from grooms family members and her own family

With this the ceremony ends.........

  ഒരു കുഞ്ഞ് ജനിച്ചാല്‍ ഒടനെ വലത് ചെവിയില്‍ ബാങ്കും ഇടത് ചെവിയില്‍ ഇകാമത്തും ചൊല്ലിക്കൊട്കും. പിന്നെ കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ നാവില്‍  മധുരം തൊട്ട്ക്കൊടുക്കണം. അടുത്തതായി പേരിടലാണ്‌ ,ഇത് പ്രസവിച്ച ഉടനയോ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഏയാമത്തെ ദിവസമോ അതുമല്ലെങ്കില്‍ നാപപോളിക്കോ ആയിരിക്കും ഏയാമത്തെ ദിവസം മുടികളയുകയും ആണ്കുഞ്ഞാനെങ്കില്‍ സുന്നത്ത് കല്യാണവും നടത്താറുണ്ട്. ഇത് രണ്ടും നപോളിക്കും ചെയ്യാവുന്നതാണ് .സുന്നത് കല്യാണം ഒന്പത് വയസ് വരെയും ചെയ്യാം. കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ ആരോഗ്യത്തിന്‌ വേണ്ടിയും നന്മയ്ക്ക് വേണ്ടിയും അഖീഖ അറക്കാറുണ്ട് ഇത് കുഞ്ഞ് ജനിച്ചതുമുതല്‍ കുഞ്ഞിനു പ്രായപൂര്‍ത്തിയാകുന്നത് വരെ ചെയ്യാവുന്നതാണ്.അഖീഖ അറുത്തതിന്റെ വിഹിതം കുടുംബത്തിലെ എല്ലാവര്ക്കും എത്തിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്.പിന്നെ അയല്‍വാസികള്‍ക്കും പാവപ്പെട്ടവര്‍ക്കും.

നാപോളി (നാല്പത് കുളി)

   കുഞ്ഞ് ജനിച് നാല്പതാം ദിവസത്തിലെ ചടങ്ങാണ് നാപോളി.ഈ ദിനത്തില്‍ കുട്ടിയുടെ ഉമ്മയുടെയും ഉപ്പയുടെയും ബന്ധുക്കളും അയല്‍വാസികളും വന്ന്‍ കുഞ്ഞിന് പുതുവസ്ത്രവും സ്വര്‍ണവും അണിയിക്കും.അടുത്ത കുടുംബത്തില്‍ പെട്ടവര്‍ കുഞ്ഞിന് സ്വര്‍ണവും കൊടുക്കും.അതുപോലെതന്നെ കുഞ്ഞിന്ടെ ഉമ്മയേയും അണിയിച് ഒരുക്കും. എന്നിട്ട് അവരേയും കൂട്ടി വീടിന്ടെ ഒരു വശത്ത് നിന്ന്‍ മറ്റൊരു വശത്തേക്ക് നടക്കും.വീട്ടിലുള്ള കായബലമുള്ള ഒരു തെങ്ങില്‍ വെള്ളമൊയിപ്പിക്കും.അവള്‍ വീട്ടില്‍ കയറുന്ന സമയത്ത് ഒരു ചട്ടിയില്‍ മിടായി നിറച് അവള്‍ അറിയാതെ ചട്ടി പൊട്ടിക്കും.അവളെ ചമയിക്കാന്‍ വരുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് ആദ്യം നല്‍കുക പെട്ടിപ്പത്തിലും ചായയുമാണ്.പെട്ടിപത്തില്‍ എന്നുപറഞ്ഞാല്‍ തലശ്ശേരിയിലും പരിസരത്തും മാത്രം കണ്ടുവരുന്ന ഒരു വിഭവമാണ്.അതിനുശേഷം മറ്റു വിഭവമാര്‍ന്ന ഭക്ഷണം നല്‍കി അവരെ സല്കരിക്കും

എന്റെ പ്രദേശത്ത് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ ആചാരമാണ് ഇത്.ഒരു കുട്ടിക്ക് നിശ്ചിത പ്രായമെത്തിയാല്‍ ആ കുട്ടിയുടെ വീട്ടില്‍ നിന്നും സ്വര്‍ണ കമ്മലുമായി വന്ന്‍ കാത് കുത്തി കൊട്ക്കും .ഈ കാലത്ത് വലിയ ചടങ്ങുകളോന്നുമില്ലാതയാനു ഈ ചടങ്ങ് നടത്തുന്നത്,

MARRIAGE

Marriage is one of the most fundamental and ancient institution since the beginning of the society. The institution of marriage has certain obligation and responsibility in regard to sex and other matters related to it. The institution of marriage has change in accordance with the changes in the society; it form, natural and process vary society to society.

Marriage is defined by ‘WESTER MARK’ as a relation of one or more men to one or more women which is recognized by custom or law and involves certain right and duties both in case of the parties entering the union and in the case of children born of it. In order to give marriage stability, certain laws about marriage were framed. It began binding for men and women to fulfill certain obligation after marriage. Marriage is a union between men and women born, such that children born by the women are recognized as the legitimate offspring of both parties.

MUSLIM MARRIAGE

In the Muslim community marriage is universal, for it discourages celibacy. muslim call their marriage ’NIKAH’. According to S C Sarkar, marriage among the muslim is not sacrament, but purely a civil contract.

‘Muslim marriage is a contract for the purpose of legalizing sexual intercourse and the procreation of children’. On basis of the above statement, it should not be concluded that the Muslim marriage does not have any religious significance. marriagein the muslim society has a religious duty also. It is devotion and an act ‘IBADAT’. The important objectives of the Muslim marriage is that are; control over sex, ordering of domestic life procreation of children and upbringing of children.

MARRIAGE CEREMONY IN THALASSERY

MALABAR MAPPILA WEDDING

A typical Malabar mappila wedding as practiced in the costal belts of Thalassery. Kannur,area of Kerala have rich with traditions unlike Muslim in other part of Kerala. An influence of north Indian Muslim wedding and the Arabian can be seen in them. It is due to the Persian and Arabian influence in the region during the medevial period of which their descendants still during in their places.

ENGAGEMENT

A typical mappila engagement ceremony is called ‘valayidal’ function which will be conducted, as the groom’s family visit the girls house and present her with a bangle(or some other things like necklace, ring, chocolates etc..)in the function. The marriage day will be fixed on this day.

PRE WEDDING CEREMONIES

Muslim wedding are elaborate affairs both in terms of fasting and ceremony. According to old Malabar tradition, the celebration starts two days before the marriage.

DAY 1

ARIKUTHICHERAL

Close relatives of both families gathered at their respective houses and arranged rice and other cereals for the wedding day. As in earlier days they used to crush rice in ‘urals’ and pack them to gather by singing songs. Now a days it is done only symbolically with decorated ‘urals’, this will followed by an elaborate feast with special dishes for the day. Today most of the peoples in Thalassery are celebrating this function.

DAY 2

MYLANCHI

In this day the bride are dressed up from his father’s house. They will give her ornaments like bangles, necklace ear ring, etc…. The mehendhi designers design her hands and legs with mehendhi. The family members and relatives sing mappila songs teasing her and praising her beauty. A similar function takes place at brides and grooms house also; instead of applying mehendhi on hands, it is put on the top of a leaf in his palm. At last of this function the close relatives of groom will visit the brides house for putting mehendhi on her hand. After that the brides family will them a tea party, after that they will there.

The intention of this function is to ensure every members from the other side bride and get a chance to have a chat with her before the wedding.

NIKAH

The muslim wedding ritual called ‘Nikah’,is a contract between the groom and the bride’s father. This is usually takes place at the bride’s house and the groom arrives accompanied by his family (men) friends and musicians.

Bride’s father and groom exchange vows infront of the moulavi, who then reads the verse of Quran. As the boys side proposes, the girls side convey her consist which is given in front of witnesses. Men and women are seated separately to watch the event. The groom gives ‘MEHAR’ to the bride and the contract is registered by nikaannama (a document). After this they will give sweets to all.

After this the groom and his relatives will enter into the bride’s house for feast. The bride will be revealed to the guest and the bride and groom will meet each other in this time. This time the girls and women’s will sang song (mappilapattu) and dance in possessions. After that the bride’s mother will arrive with a glass of milk, the bride and groom will drink this (this indicates sharing). The guests convey their wishes and blessings during this grand reception. After that the groom and his relatives will return back. Then the grooms sisters, cousins, and family members will approach the bride’s house for bringing the bride to the groom’s house. They will bring dresses and ornaments with them. After that the guests willconvey their wishes and blessings to them, and will return back with the bride.

After leaving of the groom’s family, the bride’s family members and relatives will visit the groom’s house. The groom’s family warmly invites them to their house. They will give drinks and other things to them. The groom’s mother invites the bride and the groom to the house. After that they will return back.

Then after that the grooms father, mother, sisters and cousins will present her gold ornaments. After some hours bride’s father and uncle will come to groom’s house for bringing groom and bride to bride’s house. At that time they will talk about reception and function. On that occasion the groom’s family will sent a bag with her, that had full of dresses for the bride and for her family( mother, father, sisters, brothers, grant mother, grant father, uncle, aunty) and other things that she wants.

RECEPTION

This function will be conducted in the very next day of the marriage. It will be conducted on bride’s house at night. Grooms family members welcome them with great pleasure. Childrens from groom’s house will give lots of gifts to the bride. They all should be in great pleasure. The bride’s family had arranged grand food items to these peoples. Lots of new and delicious food items were there. After the dinner they will return back.

FUNCTIONS

This should be conducted on the next two days after the marriage. It had been conducted at noon or sometimes at night. Bride’s father, mother, sisters and other relatives will go to grooms house with bride. This function was conducting, because she wants to stay there for one or two days. Bride’s family would enter there with great happiness, and the grooms family will warmly welcomed them to their home. Grooms family will treat them with delicious drinks and had already prepared lots of  foods also like, fish biriyani, fried rice, chilly chicken, battura ,nice pathal, beef curry, chicken curry, ice cream, pudding etc………... After the lunch/dinner they will return to their home.

Likewise the groom’s family also visits bride’s house to return bride to her house itself. The bride will be dressed with new and beautiful cloth (sari, lehengha which will be decorated with tread or shining stone). And they also will treat them with delicious foods. After the lunch/dinner they will return back.

PALLIKEEYAL

After the marriage the coming Friday or next Friday will be conducted has pallikeeyal. It means that; the groom should go to the Friday oration at their nearby masjid of bride’s house. And after that he should return to the bride’s house for lunch, it will be his first lunch at his wives house. Her mother will make delicious food for him. Some peoples will conducts this on 15^th day after the marriage.

40^thday

Most of the muslims are celebrating this day. On this day the bride will be invited to her husband’s house for lunch, and from there she will get new dress from his mother.

THE HISTORY OF MY LIVING PLACE

Dharmadam

My living place is dharmadam. It is a census town in thalassery taluk of kannur district in the state of kerala ,india. It is known for the 100 year old government brennen college and dharmadam island. Dharmadam is also known to famous andalloor kavu .the annual festival here draws thousands of devotees. Variety of theyyems are performed during the week long festin febrauery. During the week long fest in febrauery . During the festivae season the entire village follows vegeterian diet and offers rice flakes,jaggery and plaintains to  all guests. Indias premier circuss academy,circuss academy thalassery is also located at dharmadam .  There is a small railway station in dharmadam where only the local passenger trains stop.

Dharmadam was earlier known as dharmapattanom and was previosly a buddiest strong hold. The dharmadam island is located 100 meters away from the main land at dhrmadam . Geographicaly,dhrmadam is an island , en route thalassery and kannur .it is surrounded by the anjarakandy river on the three sides and by the arabian sea on the fourth side .the jews and the arabs have named dharmadam has dhafvattan in their records in 12 th century .the british named it dharmapatam and the portughese called it dharmapalam .the last perumal of kerela cheraman perumal left for arabia from poyanad province north of dharmadam .the relics of fort of perumals sisters p ravi nephew mahabali is seen in the vicinity of govt brennen college .mahabali was believed to have been converted to islam by malik bin dinar nd later became the first ali raja of arakkal kingdom .

Brennen college is the famous educationalm institution of dhrmadam  and also it is  one of the oldest educational institution in kerela affliated to kannur university .the brennen college evolved from a school  established by the english philanthropist edward brennen who had made thalassery his home . In dec 2004 the govt of kerele bestoyed the status of university of govt brennen college. Brennen college devoloped out of the free school established in 18862 by edward brennen a master attendent of telicherry port .

The brennen college campus is situated in dharmadam panchayath ob a hillock just 5kl north of thalassery town and 1kl away from kannur - thalassery national highway.

Shandhivanam is probably the only conserved pristint forest patch in college campus in kerela. The gren house beside the new p g block and the medicinal herbs garden in front of the administrative blocks also signify the eco friendly culture of the brennen college.

And other educational instiotutions in the dharmadam is kannur university thalassery campuis, palayad ,district institute of education training palayad ,govt higher secondary school, palayad, jeyee special school dharmadam ,rotary special school dhramadam .

Dharmadam village panchayath was established in 1950 it is one of the village panchayath in the district with strong communist base .\

The panchayath is located at a distance of 4 kl on the north west of thalassery town just adjecent to the thalasry muncipality . The national highways no.47 passes threw the panchayath.

The feeds among the british ,french and dutch for supermacy in trade is also set to have greatly influence in the village very much.easy accesibility and availability of condiments like peeper and cardamom in large scale in near by areas had been and attraction to the foreingers and hence a place of contentation for control and domination by different local kingdoms of kolathirir, arakkal and kottayam ,as well as by the british the places also linked to the famous pazhassiraja to the kottayam and tippusulthan of mysoor . The village has a railway station which is 5 and 15 kl away from kannur and thalassery respectivly .there is a industrial estate in village with about 39 small scale industries apart from a no. Of others small indusrial units such as the ice factory, printing press, macth box compony ,die making,milk products and production,textile industry etc.. Located in different parts of village .

The village has 5 public libraries and 9 reading rooms and is known for having the educational institutions starting from the level of lower kinder garden (lkg) to the level of university pg and  reserch department.

Though the total area of the panchayath is only 10.68 sq.kms. It encompasses all types of landscapes including hills and elevated plains, slopes,valleys,coastal plains and wet lands. The kerela state had distribution batch which has categorised the lands of kerala under 13 agricultural zones, has included dharmadam under the northern mid land zone and designated to the lands of this region has belonging to the kaippad lands .the rainy season lasts for 6 months starting from june. The winter is experienced in dec and jan while the summer is  for 4 months starting from feb and lasting till the month of may .

The average annual rain fall for the district is 2467 mm the major water resources for the village is rain water received threw the south west monsoon during thula varsham  sep, oct, nov.the maximum rain is received during idavapathy (first half of june).

ഉമ്മത്തൂര്‍ എന്ന എന്‍റെ നാട്

കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയില്‍ നാദാപുരം നിയോചക മണ്ഡലത്തില്‍ ചെക്യാട് പഞ്ചായത്തിലെ “ഉമ്മത്തൂര്‍” എന്ന കൊച്ചു ഗ്രാമമാണ് എന്‍റെ നാട്.സാംസ്കാരിക ,വിദ്യാഭ്യാസപരമായും  നിയോചക മണ്ഡലത്തിലെ മറ്റു നാടുകളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് വളരെ മുന്നില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്ന നാടാണ് ഉമ്മത്തൂര്‍.ഇതിന്‍റെ പ്രധാന കാരണം ചുറ്റുപാടും നിലകൊള്ളുന്ന വിദ്യാഭ്യാസസ്ഥാപനങ്ങളാണ്. ഗ്രാമ പ്രധേഷമായതിനാല്‍ തന്നെ പച്ചപ്പ്‌ നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്നതാണ്. ഉമ്മതൂരിനെ മനോഹരമാക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു കാര്യം മയ്യഴിപ്പുഴ നാടിന്‍റെ മൂന്നു ഭാഗത്ത്‌ കൂടി ഒഴുകുന്നു എന്നതാണ്.ഇവിടെ നിരവധി സ്കൂളുകളും കോളെജുകളും ഉണ്ട്.ഇത് തന്നെയാണ് ഉമ്മത്തൂര്‍ സാംസ്കാരിക,വിദ്യാഭ്യാസപരമായും വലരാന്‍ കാരണം. പ്രധാനമായും രണ്ട് മതങ്ങളാണ് ഇവിടെ ഉള്ളത്.ഹിന്ദു മതവും,ഇസ്ലാം മതവും.ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അവരുടേതായ മതങ്ങളും രാഷ്ട്രീയവും ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും സാമൂഹ്യ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളില്‍ മുന്നിട്ടു നില്‍ക്കുന്നു.ഇതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ഇവിടെ വര്‍ഗീയ കലാപങ്ങള്‍ ഒന്നും തന്നെ നടക്കുന്നില്ല.

ഉമ്മത്തൂരില്‍ “പാലോള്ളതില്‍” എന്ന തറവാട്ടിലാണ് ഞാന്‍ ജനിച്ചത്.1940 ലാണ് എന്‍റെ ഉപ്പാപ്പ ഇവിടെ കൃഷിയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടാണ് ഇവിടെ വന്നത്. അന്ന ഇവിടെ പത്ത് തറവാടുകള്‍ മാത്രമേ ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. എന്നാല്‍ ഇന്ന് മുന്നൂറോളം വീടുകള്‍ ഉമ്മത്തൂരിലുണ്ട്. അന്നത്തെ പ്രധാന കച്ചവട കേന്ദ്രം മാഹിയായിരുന്നു. ഇന്ന് ഉമ്മത്തൂരിനെ കണ്ണൂര്‍ ജില്ലയുമായി ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ മൂന്നു റോഡു പാളങ്ങള്‍ വന്ന്. അത്കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ കച്ചവടത്തിന് വിസ്തൃതി കൂടി.ആശുപത്രികള്‍ കുറവായതിനാല്‍ ഉമ്മത്തൂരിലെ ജനങ്ങള്‍ തലശ്ശേരിയെ ആശ്രയിച്ചു. ഇവിടുത്തെ ഭാഷ വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. സംസാര ഭാഷയില്‍ ഒരു “ക്ക” കൂടുതലായി. ഉദാ:പോയിക്കാ, വന്നിക്കാ, തുടങ്ങിയവ.. ഭക്ഷണ കാര്യങ്ങളിലും കല്യാണ കാര്യങ്ങളിലും ഉമ്മത്തൂര്‍ വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്.

ടെമ്പിള്‍ഗേറ്റ്

കണ്ണൂര്‍ ജില്ലയിലെ തലശ്ശേരി പട്ടണത്തിനു അടുത്തായി നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഒരു സ്ഥലമാണ് ടെമ്പിള്‍ഗേറ്റ് ശ്രി നാരായണ ഗുരു സ്ഥബിച്ചതാണ് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നു ശ്രി ജഗനാഥ ടെമ്പിള്‍ എന്ന ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു അടുത്തായി നിലനില്‍ക്കുനത് കൊണ്ടാണ് ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ ടെമ്ബിള്‍ഗേറ്റ് എന്ന പേരില്‍ അറിയപെടുന്നത് കൂടാതെ ഇതിനു സമീപമായി ഒരു റെയില്‍വെ സ്റ്റേഷനും ഉണ്ട് അതിനാല്‍ അതിനാല്‍ അവിടെ ജഗനാഥ് ടെമ്ബിള്‍ഗേറ്റ് എന്നും അറിയപെടുന്നു

        ടെമ്പിള്‍ഗേറ്റ് കാഴ്ചയില്‍ പച്ച പിടിച്ചു നെല്‍ വയലാല്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്നു ഈ ഗ്രാമ ഭംഗി പണ്ടത്തെ പോലെ ഇല്ലങ്ങിലും പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായും നികത്തപെട്ടിടുമില്ല വയലായി നിറഞ്ഞതിനാല്‍ തുടര്‍ന്ന് വയലള൦ എന്ന പേരിലും ഈ പ്രദേശം അറിയപെടുന്നു.

ഇസ്‌ലാമിക് ഹിസ്റ്ററി 2011-2014 

തലശ്ശേരി‌ നഗരത്തിന് കിഴക്കുഭാഗത്തായാണ് കതിരൂര്‍ ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്ത്‌ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ആകെ ഭൂവിസ്തൃതി 12.30 ച.കീ. മീറ്റര്‍ആണ്. 2001ലെ സെന്‍സസ് പ്രകാരം 28989 പേര്‍ ഇവിടെ അധിവസിക്കുന്നു.17വാര്‍ഡുകളാണ് ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്തില്‍ നിലവിലുള്ളത്.സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച പഞ്ചായത്തുകളിലൊന്നായി കതിരൂര്‍ ഇന്ന്‍ മാറിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു. ആരോഗ്യമേഖല, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസമേഖല തുടങ്ങി എല്ലാ മേഖലകളിലും കതിരൂര്‍ ഇന്ന്‍ മറ്റ് പഞ്ചായത്തുകള്‍ക്ക് മാതൃകയാണ്. മാലിന്യമുക്ത പഞ്ചായത്തായി കതിരൂര്‍ ഇന്ന്‍ മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക്‌ റിസൈക്കിള്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളിലൂടെയും മറ്റ്‌ സേവന പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളിലൂടെയും കതിരൂരിനെ മറ്റ്‌ പഞ്ചായത്തുകളില്‍ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്ത്നാക്കി മാറ്റുന്നു.

കതിരൂര്‍ എന്നാല്‍ “കതിരവന്‍റെ നാട്” എന്ന വിശേഷണത്താല്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളില്‍ കതിരൂര്‍ നെല്‍വയലുകള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ പച്ചിലകളുള്ള പ്രദേശമായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ഇന്ന്‍ ആ വയലുക്കളല്ലാം വന്‍ കെട്ടിടങ്ങളായി മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ശ്രീ സൂര്യനാരായണ ക്ഷേത്രം ഇവിടെ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത് കൊണ്ടാണ് കതിരൂരിന് “കതിരവന്‍റെ നാട്” എന്ന പേര് വരാന്‍ കാരണം എന്നാണ് പറഞ്ഞു കേള്‍ക്കുന്നത്. നൂറുകണക്കിനാളുകള്‍ ദിനംപ്രതി  സന്ദര്‍ശനം നടത്തുന്ന ഈ നാട് പ്രസക്തവുമാണ്.

ജാതി മത ഭേതമന്യേ ജനങ്ങള്‍ ഒത്തൊരുമയോടെ ഒരമ്മ പെറ്റ മക്കളെപ്പോലെ കഴിയുന്നവരാണ് കതിരൂര്‍ നിവാസികള്‍. സന്തോഷങ്ങളും സൗഹൃദങ്ങളും കളിയാടുന്ന എന്‍റെ സ്വന്തം നാട് ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ ഒരോ ആഘോഷങ്ങളിലും ദുഃഖങ്ങളിലും എല്ലാവരും പങ്കുചേരുന്നു. ഇത് പോലുള്ള നാടുകള്‍ ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ തന്നെ കുറവായിരിക്കുമെന്ന്‍ ഞാന്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. അത് പോലെ തന്നെ കതിരൂര്‍ ഗ്രാമ പഞ്ചായത്തിന്‍റെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില്‍ ഗ്രാമസഭ പല പരിപാടികളും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. അതില്‍ നിന്ന്‍ പാവപ്പെട്ട വിഷമത അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന കുടുംബത്തെ പ്രത്യേകം കണ്ടെത്തുകയും അവര്‍ക്ക് പല  വിധത്തിലുള്ള സഹായങ്ങളും നല്‍കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. അത് പോലെ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ക്ക് കളരി അഭ്യാസം നല്‍കിവരുന്നു.

ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളില്‍ കതിരൂര്‍ “കളരി” യഭ്യാസം കൊണ്ട് അറിയപ്പെട്ട് നാടായിരുന്നു. നാണു കുരിക്കളുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ കളരി അഭ്യസിക്കാന്‍ മറ്റ്‌ പല ദിക്കുകളില്‍ നിന്നും വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ ഇവിടേക്ക് വരാറുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ പിന്‍ തുടര്‍ച്ചക്കാര്‍ ഇന്നും ഇവിടെ താമസിക്കുന്നു. കതിരുരിനെ കുറിച്ച് എഴുതുകയാണെങ്കില്‍ എല്ലാ വിധ മേഖകളിലും ഉന്നത സ്ഥാനം കൈവരിച്ച ഒരു നാട് അത് കതിരൂര്‍ മാത്രമായിരിക്കും. എല്ലാവിധ ആധുനിക സൗകര്യങ്ങളും ഇവിടെ ലഭ്യമാണ്. ഏതൊരു നഗരത്തെയും വെല്ലുന്ന സൗകര്യങ്ങള്‍ അത് കതിരൂര്‍കാര്‍ക്ക് മാത്രം അവകാശപ്പെട്ടതാണ്. ഈ ഒരു കൊച്ചു ഗ്രാമത്തില്‍ ഹയര്‍സെക്കന്‍റെറിസ്കൂളുകള്‍, ഹോസ്പിറ്റല്‍, വില്ലേജ ഓഫീസ്,പോലീസ് സ്റ്റേഷന്‍, ബാങ്കുകള്‍, രജിസ്റ്റര്‍ ഓഫീസ്, ഷോപ്പിംഗ് സെന്‍റര്‍ തുടങ്ങി എല്ലാം ഇവിടെ ഒത്തൊരുമിക്കുന്നു. കതിരൂരിനെ ഏതൊരു പ്രവര്‍ത്തനത്തില്‍ നിന്നും മാറ്റി നിര്‍ത്തുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കുകയില്ല. അത് പോലെ “പൂമ്പാറ്റകളുടെ പറുദീസ” യായി കതിരൂരിനെ ഇന്ന്‍ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. പലതരത്തില്‍ലുള്ള പൂമ്പാറ്റകളെക്കുറിച്ച് പഠിക്കുകയും അവയുടെ വളര്‍ച്ചാഘട്ടങ്ങള്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ മനസിലാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

     കതിരൂരില്‍ എല്ലാവരുടെയും ശ്രദ്ധ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ ആകര്‍ഷിക്കുന്ന ഗവഃ കതിരൂര്‍ വൊക്കെഷണള്‍ ഹയര്‍സെക്കന്‍ററി സ്കൂളിലേക്കാണ് പ്രൈമറി തലം മുതല്‍ ഹയര്‍ സെക്കന്‍ററി തലം വരേയുള്ള സ്ക്കൂളാണ് കതിരൂര്‍ സ്കൂള്‍. ഞാന്‍ അവിടെ ഹയര്‍സെക്കന്‍ററി പഠനം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കിയതിനാല്‍ സ്ക്കുളിനെ ക്കുറിച്ച് കൂടുതല്‍ മനസിലാക്കുവാന്‍ സാധിച്ചു. ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളിലുള്ള കണ്ണൂര്‍ ജില്ലയിലെ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട ഹയര്‍സെക്കന്‍ററി സ്ക്കൂളുകളില്‍ ഒന്നായിരുന്നു. സ്മൂഹത്തിലെ സിനിമ രാഷ്ട്രിയ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരില്‍ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും കതിരൂര്‍ സ്ക്കൂളില്‍ പഠിച്ചവരാണ്. വിദ്യാലയ മുത്തശ്ശികളില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുത്താവുന്ന ഒരു സ്ക്കുളാണിത്. ഏതാണ്ട് നൂറ് വര്‍ഷത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ സ്ക്കൂള്‍ എന്നും നാട്ടുകാരുടെ അഭിമാനമാണ്. തുടക്കം മുതല്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ വരെS.F.I. മാത്രമാണ് ഈ സ്ക്കൂളില്‍ വിജയം കൊയ്യുന്നത്. പഠന പ്രവര്‍ത്തന  വിഷയങ്ങളില്‍ കതിരൂര്‍ മറ്റ് സ്ക്കൂളുകള്‍ക്ക് മാതൃകയാണ്. കലോഝവങ്ങളിലും കായിക വേളകളിലും കതിരൂര്‍ സ്ക്കൂളിന്‍റെ നിറ സാനിദ്ധ്യമുണ്ടായിരിക്കുമെന്ന്‍ തീര്‍ച്ച. കതിരൂര്‍ സ്കൂളിലേക്ക്  വരുന്ന ആരെയും  ആകര്‍ഷിക്കുന്നത് സ്കൂളിന്‌ മുനിലുള്ള മുത്തശ്ശി മാവാണ്. അതിന്‍റെ ഒരോ ഇലകളും കൊഴിഞ്ഞു വീഴുന്നത് സഖാക്കളുടെ മുദ്രാവാക്യം കേട്ട് കൊണ്ടാണ്. തികഞ്ഞ  അച്ചടക്കവും കൃത്യ നിഷ്ട്ടതയുള്ള  വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളാണ് ഇവിടെ ഉള്ളത്. ഉത്തരവാദിത്വത്തോടെ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന അധ്യാപകന്മാരാണ് ഇവിടെയുള്ളത്. ഇതിനെല്ലാം പിന്നില്‍P.T.A സംഘാടകരാണ്. ഈ വര്‍ഷത്തെ മികച്ച P.T.A ക്കുള്ള അവാര്‍ഡിനും അര്‍ഹതയായിട്ടുണ്ട്. അത് പോലെ ശുചിത്വ വിദ്യാലയത്തിനുള്ള അവാര്‍ഡും കതിരൂരിനെ തേടി പല തവണ വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്.

     ഈ വിദ്യാലയത്തിന്‍റെ പിന്‍വശത്തായ സര്‍വ്വ ശിക്ഷാ അഭിയാന്‍റെ  സെന്‍ററും പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഇവിടെ പല തരത്തിലുള്ള മത്സരങ്ങള്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ക്കായി നടത്തിവരുന്നു.

     കതിരൂര്‍ സി.പി.എമ്മിന്‍റെ ചെങ്കോട്ടയാണെന്ന്‍ അവകാശപ്പെടുന്ന പല രാഷ്ട്രിയ നേതാക്കന്‍മാരെയും നമുക്ക് കാണുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കും. ഏതൊരു വ്യക്തിയും കതിരൂരിലേക്ക്സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്യുന്നത് ചുവന്ന  ലിപികളിലുള്ള ബോര്‍ഡുകളായിരിക്കും അവയില്‍ നമുക്ക് കാണാന്‍ കഴിയുന്ന്ത്അവരുടെ മുദ്രാവാക്യങ്ങളും രക്തസാക്ഷികളുടെ ചിത്രങ്ങളുമായിരിക്കും. ചുവപ്പ് കൊണ്ട് അലങ്കരിച്ച കതിരൂരിനെ അന്യ ദേശക്കാര്‍ നോക്കിക്കാണുന്നത് ഭയത്തോട് കൂടിയാണ്. മറ്റുള്ള പാര്‍ട്ടികളും കുറഞ്ഞ തോതില്‍ ഇവിടെയുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ എന്നും ബാലസംഘം പോലുള്ള പരിപാടികള്‍ സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഇവരുടെ കീഴില്‍ “വിറ്റ്നെസ്സ് ലൈബ്രറി ” സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു.

    കതിരൂരിന്‍റെ മുന്‍വശതതായി സംസ്ഥാനതല ചിത്രരചനാ അവാര്‍ഡിന് അര്‍ഹാനായിട്ടുള്ള ശിവ കൃഷ്ണ  മാഷിന്‍റെ നേത്രത്വത്തില്‍ ഒരു വിപുലമായ “ആര്‍ട്ട് ഗാലറി” ഇവിടെ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ കീഴില്‍ അനേകം വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ ചിത്രം വരക്കല്‍ പരിശീലിക്കുന്നു.

     കതിരൂര്‍ വോക്കെഷണല്‍ ഹയര്‍സെക്കന്‍ററി സ്കൂളിന്‍റെ മുന്‍വശത്തായി കതിരൂര്‍ ഗ്രൗണ്ട് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ക്ലബ്ബുകളുടെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില്‍ പല രീതിയിലുള്ള കായിക മത്സരങ്ങളും അവിടെ നടക്കുന്നു. ഫുട്ബോള്‍, ക്രിക്കറ്റ്, ഹോക്കി തുടങ്ങിയ ഒട്ടേറെ മത്സരങ്ങള്‍ അവിടെ അരങ്ങേരുന്നു. പഞ്ചായത്തിന്‍റെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില്‍ “ടാലന്‍റ ഹണ്ട്” എന്ന പരിപാടിയും നടത്താറുണ്ട്.

     കതിരൂര്‍ സര്‍വ്വീസ് ബാങ്ക് ഇവിടെ വലിയ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. സംസ്ഥാന തലത്തെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ നിക്ഷേപകാരുള്ള ഒരു സ്ഥാപനമാണിത്. ജനങ്ങളില്‍ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ വിശ്വാസ അര്‍പ്പിച്ച ബാങ്കാണിത്. 55 വര്‍ഷത്തില്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ബാങ്ക് ഇന്നും ഇവിടെ തലയുയര്‍ത്തി നില്‍ക്കുന്നു. ഇത് കൂടാതെ വനിതാ ബാങ്ക്, കനറാ ബാങ്ക്, ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ഓവര്‍സീസ് ബാങ്ക് എന്നിവയും ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്. അത് പോലെ തന്നെ കതിരൂരിലെ കൃഷിഭവന്‍ ഇവിടെ മുഖ്യപങ്ക് വഹിക്കുന്നു. ഗുണമേന്മയുള്ള പ്രത്യുല്‍ പാദനശേഷിയുള്ള വിത്തുകള്‍ സൗജന്യമായും വില്‍ക്കുറവിലും ജനങ്ങളിലെക്കെത്തിക്കുന്നു. കൃഷിയുടെ പ്രോത്സാഹത്തിന് വേണ്ടി പല വിധ പരിപാടികളും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.

    മാലിന്യവിമുക്ത പഞ്ചായത്തിനുള്ള അവാര്‍ഡ് ഇന്ന്‍ കതിരൂരിനെ തേടിയെത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. കുടുംബശ്രിയുടെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില്‍ പലവിധ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇത്രയേറെ നേട്ടങ്ങള്‍ കൈവരിച്ച എന്‍റെ കൊച്ചു ഗ്രാമം എന്നും എല്ലാവരുടെയും മുന്നില്‍ തല ഉയര്‍ത്തി നില്‍ക്കുമെന്ന് തീര്‍ച്ച......
